Why would an elf be mad? I don’t know…forced labor, watching Santa engorge himself on turkey legs night after night, staring people in the knees on a daily basis, blister covered hands from slaving away on toys that are destined to be outgrown in a years… Or perhaps “mad” means crazy/insane, in which case all of the above listed grievances could lead to bizarre or “mad” behavior. Regardless, I hope it is slightly conciliatory to our tiny friends that they have a beer named after them, and that at the suggestion of @momentaryzen we will be indulging in their namesake brew this Saturday.
Troegs, based out of Harrisburg, PA is somewhat of a local favorite around here, but as far as I know, they distribute fairly widely. Mad Elf is considered a strong Belgian ale, and should be a great winter warmer at 11%. As we know, alcohol dilates blood vessels lending the illusion of warmth (though it really aids in heat loss). It should be a nice illusion for us northwestern Ohioans who are currently experiencing sub zero temperatures.
Here are the details on this brew:
Tröegs Mad Elf Ale
Alcohol by Volume: 11%
Hop Bitterness (IBU’s): 15
Color: Ruby Red
Availability: Seasonal
If you can’t find this, pick a winter warmer of your choice and let us post you review for you.
Cheers!

Sadly we do not get the Elf here in Texas. I enjoy a case or 3 of them last year when I lived in Lancaster. Hopefully I’ll be getting home soon to enjoy some Elf for myself.

I know what you mean about the cold, Nate. It’s a blisteringly cold 62 here.

So I found “Bad Elf,” but not “Mad Elf.” Sounds like a really crappy time of the year to be an elf …
I think I’ll buy an extended warranty on all of my toy purchases!

I tried Mad Elf last year and really liked it! I saw some last week and by the looks of it the price had gone up considerably from what I remember.

What is it costing now? Last I remember it was coming in at about $50-60 a case depending on where you went in Lancaster.

I finally did it!! I did a SWUS even if I didn’t know it at the time!
I picked up a case of this stuff and enjoyed it all weekend. I love it. It’s by far my favorite Christmas beer, as the cherries and honey make it actually taste seasonal, which is hard to say about many of the other “Christmas” beers out there.
Speaking of price, I picked up a case for $53.00 last week. I might get another soon – we’re going through it pretty quickly over here! Not sure what it went for last year, but I can say it’s worth every penny.
