We love beer, we thank heaven. Begrudgingly, we admit we are not the authority on all things "beer," but we know our fair share. Enjoy the good brew with us; correct us where we're wrong.

You are lucky. I've pretty much begged for this beer. I'm still holding out for Brew Dog to magnanimously send me a bottle. Anyway, I'm happy to write about this; Protz should have known better than to judge a book by its cover.

I was lucky enough to get a sample of this beer and I must say that it was interesting. Unfortunately I only got enough to give my tongue several coatings among a loud crowded room that was not the best for tasting beer. The smokiness of their stout was amplified and most people simply proclaimed it tasted like some sort of smoked meat and alcohol.

Thanks for taking the time to think about these issues before you quickly brushed it off as all marketing and hype without some sense of content.

Thanks for the "insider" track on this stuff. As I freely admitted, I don't know a lot about the UK situation. I have to say that it seems things are changing for the better on the beer front; at least I hope they are. I think it's a bit like the US 15-20 years ago. The large breweries were still the ubiquitous catchall for drinkers and craft really hadn't come into its own the way it has now. People were simply content to drink that stuff and not adventurous at all. I'm hoping things go the same way for the UK.

Well, one of the problems with the UK microbrewery scene is that, although there are some 700 small breweries now, they're generally pretty much producing the same stuff: a couple of bitters, a mild, a "summer" blonde ale, maybe a porter or stout. Nothing at all, generally, outside the British tradition, and very little that's in any way radical. This is in large part because the UK scene is so heavily biased towards cask/draught ale, and the UK consumer just is not, it appears, adventurous to try anything out of the usual. So if the drinkers in the pub won't drink the more unusual beers, the pub landlords won't buy it and it's not worth the little brewers trying to brew it because they can't sell it. BrewDog produces very little cask beer, it's much more like an American micro in that its market is largely in bottles. It's less reliant, therefore, on the deep conservatism of the average British pub drinker. Similarly Meantime, a brewery I admire deeply, is able to produce great bottled beers. (Another problem is that the UK drinks store scene is an oligopoly, but this post is quite long enough already.)
