We love beer, we thank heaven. Begrudgingly, we admit we are not the authority on all things "beer," but we know our fair share. Enjoy the good brew with us; correct us where we're wrong.

Yes, I agree with you on the wheats as well. I've had many German offerings, and I can't say that I've had a bad one. Paulaner, Franziskaner, Weihenstephaner, Schneider and Sohn, Hacker Pschorr, Ayinger and Augustiner all have produced quality wheats of varying strengths, colors, and clarity.

I've also had a few American ones, most ofter from the Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner, TX and Widmer down in Oregon. I'd say they suffer from lack of Bavarian weizen yeast. Going from memory, the Widmer probably uses a neutral American Ale yeast, while the Spoetzel Brewery (I'm guessing) uses a lager yeast. I suppose this highlights the difficulties of using more than one yeast strain in your brewery (contamination could be a problem). The best commercial variety has come from Life Oak in Austin, TX. It's rather smooth, but still somewhat light on the banana and clove esters.

But as you say, hands down the best US wheat beer I've tasted has been my own weizen dopplebock. It was GOOD. :-)

Agree with your sentiments, Tex. I'd say the same of German Wheats. I thought Vitus by Weinhenstanphaner was pretty good, too. The best US version I've had was mine but that's another story. When I brew it again I'll have to shoot one your way.

German offerings in this style are typically superior. I've had Salvator, Optimator, Celebrator, and Maximator are all excellent.

I'l pass. For me, it's Ayinger Celebrator all the way when it comes to dopplebocks. Troegs out of PA makes a nice one too called Troeginator, obviously an homage to the master.
