I’m a fan of Ommegang, which is from Cooperstown, New York. They always make solid, respectable, and sometimes surprising beers. I’ve had Rare Vos on a few occasions and thought that I ought to put up a review of this product. Do yourself a favor and try their stuff. Here is my review of Rare Vos.
The Pour: Rare Vos poured with a maple-orange body and steady, full head. The head was slightly off white and creamy in appearance. It shivered in the glass with an active and bright appearance.
The Nose: Once again, as is pretty common with Belgians, there was a powdery yeast aroma on the nose. More esters (fruit aromas) came through on this beer than some of the other Belgians that I’ve reviewed recently, although it did share in the metallic qualities of beers past. Rare Vos also had a mineral earthy tone to the nose along with herbal spice and vinous (wine-like) notes. A promise of some malty sweetness was also held out on the nose. Very nice aromas.
The Taste: The nose held a lot of promise, and I have to say that I experienced a touch of disappointment when the taste didn’t live up to my expectations. The dry, mineral earthy tones were a definite part of the the flavor. The yeast did rise up to all the powderness that the nose held out, to the extent that when it combined with the dryness, it seemed to have a slight chalkiness. A bit of residual sweetness was a nice aspect. The spicy herbalness, vinous tones, and metallic tones were also present. Even a touch of woodiness made its way onto the palate, along with a slight hop finish and bitterness.
Overall, I think this is a solid beer. There are a few things, mostly preferential, that I find to be unbalanced (which I’ve indicated above). The only way to find out what you think about it is to give a try. Everything Ommegang makes is, at least, worth a try.

Mike! Imagine my surprise to see you review a beer I have actually heard of! Matt and I toured the Ommegang Brewery when we were in Cooperstown a couple years ago. It’s a fairly small place, but it’s so charming. We got to try one of their beers, and I actually didn’t hate it! I can’t remember which one it was though. I’m sure I’m a disappointing beer friend for you. Someday I’ll love one…I can feel it!

I think you’ve really nailed what’s right and wrong with this beer, Mike.
Ommegang was one of my favorite breweries when I first got into big beers. Another was Unibroue in Montreal. But in both cases, I was eventually tuned off by the metallic and mineral tastes that seem to be present in just about everything both breweries make.
My wife’s favorite is still Maudite (from Unibroue) but I’ve pretty much lost interest in both breweries. I would still love to visit the Ommegang brewery and I think their beers are a good value, but I’ve really moved on.

@Katie-I’m making more of an effort to have stuff a lot of people can get. I’m glad you stopped by and have been there. Your not a disappointing beer friend for me because you keep trying stuff. I know that you’ll love more than one beer as time goes on. I’m really glad to know that you made it to the site.
@Jim-I still like some stuff from both brewers and I don’t mind mineral tones some times. As an example, I really like mineral tones in many British Ales. Some times it’s appropriate and other times not so much. It’s nice to have what you taste in a beer confirmed by someone else. I would love to visit Unibroue. By the way, did you know the Ommegang is part of the Duvel family?

Michael, I just came over from the link in your comment in our Rare Vos review.

I wish I read your review first because I had a heck of a hard time figuring this beer out! I suppose I need more exposure to the style?
Regarding Ommegang, I think they are a very decent brewery – this Rare Vos was the only one that didn’t thrill me from them, and maybe I’m just missing something. I’d still give the beer a second chance if given he opportunity.

I don’t think it’s great by any means. It’s a beer that’s worth having on occasion. I don’t go looking for it.
