Do you like Old Foghorn? This small beer is the second running through the grains and grist of Old Foghorn. If you want to know a little more, check out our review of Old Foghorn. But let me caution you, this beer is not quite like Old Foghorn, even if it does come from the exact same grains. If you expect this to be near the strength of a Barleywine, then you will be disappointed. Since I drank this with Old Foghorn, my review will basically be one of comparison.
The beer was very bubbly in the glass and had a nice head to it. It was multiple shades lighter than Old Foghorn, which is to be expected.
Cascade hops were still citrusy on the nose but were very much reduced. It seemed to be more lemon-touched than the Old Foghorn, which was distinctly grapefruity. Light malts were present in the brew, also.
The beer still hit in a pretty bitter fashion, which was maybe the closest resemblance that it had to Old Foghorn. A light maltiness and nuttiness were still present in the beer, but not to the degree that Old Foghorn had.
Overall, I thought that this beer drank much more like an English Bitter than it did anything else. It was enjoyable, and the remnants of Old Foghorn were still present. I think maybe the hop bitterness was not quite balanced with the malts. Perhaps this is part of what this beer does; it shows how much better the first running of a beer was. It also puts us in the place of those who were relegated to drink the seconds of a beer because they couldn’t afford the first.
