I recently had this Cold Nose Winter Ale when I was in Idaho, which is its place of origin.
When I poured the beer, it was Porter in color and had a soft stable head. Beyond this, there was not too much to look at.
But when I smelled it…man, was this beer full of floral and citrusy hops on the nose. There was also a heavy dose of butterscotch on the nose (diacetyl is the term you might hear now and again). The hop blast was more than I expected but not objectionable. There was a lactic acid and milky aroma to the beer as well. It was maybe even slightly like cookies.
Upon drinking, the beer was hoppy and roasty on the front. In fact, the hop smell did not disappoint and carried all the way through. This was also true of the roastiness. Cold Nose was very bitter and roasty in its approach. I enjoyed various aspects of the beer, and thought it was well made. It is not the typical type of beer that I would normally chose…but you might. Check it out if you can get a hold of it. You may find that this is a gem of a beer from the Gem State.
