Nate and I were recently contacted by a journalist over at Daily Finance/AOL. Anyway, we got a nice little quote and a link to our article about the cost of hops. The Daily Finance article is less about craft beer specifically and more about beer in general. Still, it was nice to get a bit of attention… I’ll have a beer or two to celebrate!

I have some thoughts about the article and will write soon about the ideas that it sparked.
Nice job, guys.
I noticed the price change at my local store about three months ago. I asked the manager what was going on with six-pack prices and he said, “grain and hops have gone up in price.” Many sixers that used to sell for $7.99 shot up to $9.99 overnight.
Honestly, this may have a huge affect on people getting into craft beer. I am less prone to “experimenting” on a six pack at $10. There also seems to be no established pattern to the price increase as you can still buy many excellent imported German, etc beers for the same price as they were pre “grain / hop crisis” … yet the craft American stuff has gone thru the roof.

It’s pretty American. The article was a good primer on walking through some issues but you really would have to wrote a tome to cover all the reasons why. I think, and I’ll say it again and honestly, there will be some maturity coming the mindset of America about the beer. We have to remember that the craft scene really is pretty new and we are still throwing of the oppression of prohibition.
I think you are right to point out the disjunct when it comes to American craft rising while others stay the same.

Well … let’s hope American beer prices don’t follow the same price gouging patterns as gasoline. Yes….we need gas to drive our cars in the Summer. No … we’re not happy about paying the extra $$$ just because it’s Summer time. If the cost of gas/grain/hops comes down … please don’t put the screws to us just because you know we need it / want it.
Ok, maybe comparing beer and gas wasn’t a good example. Although, I can personally attest that beer and “gas” are related.
Sorry. My bad!

Ha! Nice little joke there. I actually think the gas price analogy stands up. Perhaps the most overt example of gouging is ebay selling…but it still happens a bit in the market place.
