As we promised in February, we are going to post about homebrewing. We are finally ready to go. Let me tell you, between work, writing normally for this blog, and drinking new beers (I only have a complaint about the first on this list), it took a fair amount of time to write the seven beer articles that we set out to do. We’ve tried to put a bunch of work into the series and keep it as simple as possible. There were many points where we could have expatiated on a given topic, but we wanted to avoid making you crazy with too much information. As it is, we already have plenty of information on brewing to get you to the point of making your own. We will be posting our first official article tomorrow.
A word about making your own beer. There are few things that I’ve found more rewarding, enjoyable, and awe-inspiring in my life than making my own beer. I don’t have kids yet, but I often tease that I worry about my beer like I would a new born baby. Is it breathing (i.e., fermenting)? Look how fast it’s growing up! I’ve found myself fondly thinking about my first experiences with brewing. I guess I have about 75-80 gallons under my belt at this point but am never satisfied until I find the perfect brew. This is, of course, a Chimera–but many pursuits are pushed on under the illusion of perfection. Striving for greatness in brewing, living, or whatever else we are doing does, in a sense, make us great.
So, it is with the love of our art that we invite you to become the next Van Gogh, Monet, Dali or whichever beer artist you want to be. That is the real beauty of homebrewing for me; I’m putting something out there that I have uniquely made, and it is likely that nothing else has ever existed that is exactly the same as what I’ve made. I think that Nate feels the same way. If you love beer, try your hand at homebrewing. If you already know how, teach a friend. And please tell your friends about this series. Cheers!

After reading this, I am even more anxious to brew this weekend!

Good! I hope that is the reaction of everybody.

Really looking forward to see what you guys came up with. Hey, do you name your brews?

I name my brews Scott…if only for me. I bottled a batch of Hefeweizen 2 weeks ago, and a batch of imperial pilsner/IPA saturday. both need names.
My batch before that…a red ale, I name “Bob’s Broken Back Ale,” since I brewed it after a sledding accident in which my Dad (whose name is Bob) broke his back (but recovered!)

I’m really looking forward to reading this series of articles.

I just posted the first one. I’m hoping that people feel the way that you do about it. We will be posting one article a day, so that everybody can get an opportunity to think about and work through an article without having to feel like they are being rushed.

Scott,
I do name my brews. The most recent one that I brewed was an Oatmeal Stout. My little brother was supposed to be up and helping me brew, but he got up too late. So, I named my beer “Flakey Boy Oatmeal Stout”.
