Three Floyd’s makes some pretty good stuff.  If you’re unfamiliar with this brewery, try to familiarize yourself with them if you have the opportunity.  Here in Plainfield, IN, it’s not hard to get their stuff since they’re from Munster, IN.  Their stuff is characteristically hoppy and bold.  Here is my review of their Black Sun Stout.

Seeing as how this is a Stout, this beer is pretty dark.  It was black with only hints of brown coming through when held up to light.  Above the blackness was a dark brown head that stayed atop the beer.  It looked like an eclipse in the glass.

As I said above, Three Floyd’s beers are always heavy-handed on the hops, even for a Dry Irish Stout like this one.  I immediately caught hop resins on the nose.  Slight irony touches were intermingled with the slight chocolate and very coffee-oriented tones of the beer.  Hints of sweet malt also made their way to my nose.

Tipping back the beer, I caught coffee notes when it hit my mouth.  The slight sweetness and alcohol warmth also hit right away.  Once the beer was sitting in my mouth, a juicy acidic tartness came through along with some very minimal fruitiness and a touch of chocolate.  As the tastes transformed, a very nice dark roasted burnt grain finish translated itself into a dry and tobacco smoked flavor.  I also made a note that some slight Bourbon qualities were present in the beer.

As far as beers go, this was pretty decent.  It certainly isn’t my favorite Three Floyd’s product.  If you want a more complex dark beer, try your hand at their Alpha Klaus Christmas Porter (it drinks like a hoppy Stout).  Who knows, you may love this beer.  Either way, you will find some seriously good beers coming out of Three Floyd’s brewery.
