Here is another German beer for you sample. I saw some other reviews on beeradvocate that I found pretty widely dispersed. I guess this goes to show that we must taste these beers for ourselves to give it a rating. Each of us likes and tastes stuff differently.
Well, Uerige apparently makes this beer specifically for U.S export. Thanks, guys. This is actually an Alt beer, which is a German word for old (as in old style or according to older tradition, as far as the denotation on the beer). The late Michael Jackson gave Uerige beers a 4-star rating, which was not something common for him to do.
When I poured this beer it was somewhat of a murky-brown color with some decent head retention.
Boy, was this beer perfumey, which hid the 8.5% alcohol deep in the beer. I don’t encounter too many German beers that have this much of a floral (hoppy) perfume aroma. Many a German beer is a great malty treat, but this is both malty and floral. Let me say it again, flowery hops were abundant. There was also a slight peppery aroma.
As I said above, sweet malts and hops were noticeable in this beer. It had an especially long dry hop bitterness on the end, along prevalent grains. This beer was truly unique compared to any other beer that I had. It was perfumey (hops) and sweet (malts). Wow! I really enjoyed the beer but it might not be for everyone. Then again, I can’t tell you what you like; you’ve got to decided that for yourself. I’m merely sharing my impressions of the beer.
